Next week we are moving to Palm Beach. I will be only six miles from the office!
I also have a lot of travel coming up this month so blogs will most likely be even less frequent :(
However I hope to be able to share some new and interesting places with you!

Here are a few shots of a sanderling at Dania Beach from a while back.

Grebe Twitch

Last week a nesting pair of Least Grebes was found about 30 miles from here. Today we decided to go and see them. Although it was pretty gray and miserable, it wasnt raining, so we set out with optimism.
As we neared our destination the wind and rain started.
We pulled in to the parking lot at Yamato Scrub Preserve in the midst of a downpour. We sat in the truck for a while and after the squall passed, I checked the weather radar on my phone, which promised clear skies after the small storm had passed.
Off we went in search of the Grebes.
We wandered along the path through oak and palmetto scrub, and saw a pair of wet mourning doves sheltering beneath the palmetto fronds.
Finally we reached the lake, and a birder couple had their binoculars trained on the grebes. One parent was foraging for food, while the other stayed sheltered close to the grasses along the lake's edge. The skies remained ominously gray.

You can see one of the babies on the adult's back!

Here comes the other parent with a fish:

And as the babies left the safety of their parent's back and began to swim around, the rain began again.

We got soaked on our way back to the truck. I brought a rain jacket but was more concerned with keeping the cameras dry.
All in all it was a successful "twitch" of a bird not seen in Florida since 1992.

Last week we went to Butterfly World. The park consists of gardens and aviaries, home to hummingbirds, finches, warblers, honeycreepers, and other tiny birds, as well as butterflies moths, koi, parrots, and a "bug house".

I took over 300 pictures and have not gone through them all yet, but here are a few I have done so far:

Pinecrest Gardens

The site that now houses Pinecrest Gardens was once home to Parrot Jungle, a famous Miami attraction. The original Parrot Jungle was opened in 1936 by Franz Scherr, and the botanical garden/ wildlife park attracted millions of visitors there before relocating to Watson Island on Biscayne Bay in 2002.

The parrots and wildlife exhibits are gone but the winding paths through the original botanical gardens remain, as do the ponds and fountains which are home to carp, turtles, iguanas, ducks, and geese.

While admiring the gardens, we noticed these unusual anoles darting amongst the rocks and shrubs along the path. After some research on the internet, I believe them to be Anolis cristatellus cristatellus, the Puerto Rican Crested Anole. It was an exciting discovery because I have not yet photographed this species of anole. It is one of the numerous non-native species of lizard that has colonized South Florida. Unsurprisingly, we did not see a single native lizard during our walk.

In other news, we are keeping a close eye on Hurricane Ike. The track looked very bad for us yesterday, a Category 4 headed directly for South Florida! The models have shifted the path further south and west now so for now it looks like the worst of it will miss us. Let's hope it continues on this path and also continues a trend of weakening over the next couple of days.

Storms, Baby Turtles

It has been a crazy week.

There are several storms at various stages of intensity stewing in the Atlantic, some heading this way. We are already experiencing some nasty wind and rain from distant Hurricane Gustav. Luckily it seems we are out of its path, not so lucky for Louisiana.

Tropical Storm Hannah looks to be heading our way, although the computer models are pretty disorganized right now.

I am starting a new job soon and will be moving in the near future to be closer to the office.

The good news is I'm off next week to relax and catch up on some things, as well as check out some properties. As long as the weather holds up, at least ;)

On to more exciting things... last weekend we visited the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach. They have plenty of sea turtle hatchlings housed temporarily until they gain strength and can be released.

The most common hatchlings are loggerheads, although there are a few green turtles as well.

Clever Crows

Dragonflies have been abundant the past several weeks due to the heavy rains and high mosquito levels. They congregate in dense clouds of hundreds and it is impossible to avoid hitting them as you drive through Everglades National Park. Not surprisingly, the juvenile crows have figured out how to get an easy meal.

Step 1. Hang around parking lot and wait for vehicles to arrive.

Step 2. Inspect vehicle for dragonfly carcasses.

Step 3. Pluck dragonfly from grille.

Step 4. Consume dragonfly.

Step 5. Repeat 1-4 as necessary.
